No fewer than 46 security men drawn from Police, National Civil Defense Corps and Vigilance group in Benue and Plateau States were trained on Securing Nigerian Community at a workshop held at Benue Hotels, Makurdi on Tuesday.
The workshop was organised by Cleen Foundation in partnership with Equal Assess International.
According to Deputy Country Director, Equal Access International, Gaad Peter the training was to ensure that security personnel are trained on early warning, early response, conflict analysis, human rights, strategic communication and the core areas of community policing.
Peter said that the trained personnel should be able to establish a community accountability forum where religious leaders, youths women and security agencies will be meeting monthly to discuss issues of community relations to ensure peace.
He said that four states, Kano, Kaduna, Benue and Plateau with a history of conflicts and crises were selected to have the training.
Peter said, “At the end of the training we expect the participants to establish a community accountability forum at the end of the training where religious leaders, youths, women and security agencies will be meeting monthly to discuss issues of community relations and to ensure peace and stability in their communities.
“The forum will be established in each local governments of Agatu Gwer West and Guma in Benue as well as Barkin Ladi, Ryom, and Jos South in Plateau.”
Also, the acting Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Mrs Ruth Olofin, emphasised in her welcome speech that the present wave of insecurity in Nigeria is catastrophic and only getting worse with no indication of slowing down.
“As part of the mandate of CLEEN Foundation, promoting public safety and security, the Securing Nigeria Communities (SNC) project is designed to increase access to information, equip key stakeholders with practical violence reduction tools and forge new social connections across conflicting groups while addressing the systematic inequalities that present barriers to human security,” Olofin posited.
