No fewer that 200 secondary schools in Ekiti State have been selected to benefit from the free distribution of sanitary pads to school girls by the FEBI Development Initiative.
According to the group, the programme was aimed at helping the school girls to remain focus with their education and not absent from school during their monthly period.
The Executive Director of FEBI Development Initiative, Abimbola Ajaja, said no girl should be made to miss her classes due to lack of menstrual hygiene products, adding that her passion for education in girl child brought about the event.
Speaking during the official launch of the group’s office building in the state, Ajaja said, “the objectives include having a steady supply of menstrual hygiene products, helping young girls who are unable to afford sanitary materials and ensure that young girls don’t stay away from school because of their monthly cycle.

“Others include, promoting good menstrual hygiene amongst young girls, providing training on the use of menstrual hygiene products and providing opportunities for young local entrepreneurs to learn how to produce reusable and safe sanitary products.”
She advised individuals and organisations to support her vision at ensuring the reduction of number of out-of-school children especially girls and also end poverty in the society.
Commissioning the building, Ekiti State high court judge, Justice Blessing Ajileye lamented that lack of hygienic sanitary pads would lead to absenteeism and missing of academic activities on the part of the girl child.
While commending the executive director for the Initiative, she expressed optimism that it would help ” vulnerable girls in the state have access to disposable and reusable sanitary pads, and a sustainable way of menstrual hygiene management.
“This initiative aligns with what the law states about human rights because menstrual poverty has affected some women to exercise their right to education.”
The Vice Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers(FIDA) Dr Banke Olagbegi-Oloba lauded the initiative promising that, “the association would support and partner with the initiative to ensure that period poverty is reduced to it barest minimum in the state.”
