Cross River Commissioner for Health, Betta Edu
The Cross River State Government, on Tuesday, recounted the losses recorded in the health sector, as a result of the #EndSARS protest, to include the complete looting and vandalisation of the state 100-bed ultramodern and technologically equipped Covid-19 isolation centre in Tinapa (Adiabor), Calabar.
Speaking to journalists in her office, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, regretted that despite the remarkable efforts embarked upon by the state government, the #EndSARS protests further sabotaged the state government’s efforts through the looting, stealing and vandalisation of the state isolation centre at Tinapa (Adiabor), Calabar last year October.
“Cross River State has put up one of the best Covid responses in Nigeria. Even before Nigeria recorded her first covid-19 positive case, we had already started the no mask-no movement campaigns, ahead of WHO, ahead of the Federal Government, we started it in Cross River State.
“Cross River State had a 100-bed COVID-19 isolation centre, commissioned, fully equipped with ICU of four beds, that were electrically operated, oxygen concentration machines. Mobile x-rays, and several other things, including ventilators.
“But unfortunately the #EndSARS protest started, that destroyed, vandalised and stole every single thing in that place. It also affected the COVID-19 lab.
“So we had to decide which to repair, whether the COVID-19 lab or the isolation centre and common sense made it clear, that the lab was more of preference because we need to keep testing people,” she noted.
The commissioner, however, assured that the state was ready to start up if another wave comes up.
