Governor Fintiri locks down Adamawa over coronavirus for 14 days

The Adamawa State government has imposed a lockdown throughout the state for a period of 14 days with effect from midnight of Tuesday, March 31, 2020, in an effort to curtail the spread of coronavirus into the state.

In a press statement signed by his Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri said though the decision is painful, is it necessary to save lives.

Nigerian Tribune reports that inter-state travel restriction was also imposed just as international borders with Cameroon other Adamawa State borders are to remain shut during the period.

The ban, according to the statement, will also affect tricycle, taxis and bus operations throughout the state.

Governor Fintiri lamented that the directive to workers on grade levels 1-14 to stay at home was not adhered to in the first instance.

He, therefore, said the government is left with no option than to impose the lockdown in the overall interest of the people as COVID-19 continues to spread with 111 reported cases in Nigeria so far.

“Social activities such as clubbing and joints are banned, markets are also hereby restricted, except for those selling food items, pharmaceuticals, filling stations, while banks are to provide skeletal services.”

The government, however, emphasises on the need to ensure basic hygiene practices of handwashing, social distancing and avoidance of crowded places.

Governor Fintiri said the measures are aimed at stemming the spread of a coronavirus outbreak that has hobbled the economy, threatened to overwhelm public healthcare and killed more people than any other disease.

He said, “we all have to forgo something for the good of Adamawa State.”
