Gombe discovers 668 Ghost workers, saves over N37m after biometric capture of civil servants

The sum of N37m has been saved by Gombe State Government after running its newly introduced biometric capture of all civil servants in the state during the payment of salaries for the month of April, 2021, just as 668 ghost workers have been discovered.

The saved amount according to the state government included that of two Local Government Areas of Akko and Gombe from the eleven LGAs in the State where the biometric capture was also run assuring that the biometric capture will be a continuous exercise until the actual strength of the State Civil Servants is ascertain.

State Commissioner of Finance, Alhaji Gambo Magaji, made the disclosure during a press briefing organized in conjunction with the office of the Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Bappayo Yahaya, who is also the Chairman of the Committee saying that no fewer than 668 staff who could also be described as ghost workers were affected.

He said that the affected workers did not show up for verification after the commencement of the enrollment, hence their suspension from the payroll of both the State Government and the two affected Local Government Areas.

While Giving a run down, the Commissioner said that 431 Workers from the 84 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the State Government were affected where over N31m was recovered.

In Gombe LGA, the Commissioner revealed that out of the 103 that were absent during the biometric capture, 59 were staff of the Local Education Authority with over N3.1m saved through the exercise.

In Akko, he said that out of the 134 staff absent during the biometric capture, 51 were found to be staff of the Local Education Authority with over N3.9m saved through the exercise.

The Commissioner then warned that it will not be business as usual as dire consequence awaits anyone found tampering with the biometric data capture machine that has been installed in all the affected offices where the exercise was carried out.
