Glo breaks own record with television launch

Published by

SULAIMON OLANREWAJU reports that with the introduction of GloTV, Globacom has again raised the bar.

Over the years, Globacom has earned a reputation as Nigeria’s most innovative and customer-centric telecommunications company because it never fails to wow its subscribers with out of the world products and services that not only make life easier for them but also make them the envy of others. For 18 solid years, Glo has repeatedly demonstrated that its raison d’être is improving the quality of life of its subscribers. So, it has consistently deployed the latest telecommunications technology, while offering top-notch innovative products and services at rock bottom rates. All of these have endeared the company to tens of millions of subscribers spread across the 774 local government areas of the country.

But Glo has just broken its own record of uncommon innovations with the introduction of GloTv, a top of the range streaming service which offers Glo subscribers entertainment on the go. Powered by the Glo 4G technology, the service, which is accessible through Android, IOS and web platforms, caters to the need of all categories of subscribers. Glo TV is a service that is offered through an easy to use exclusive app that enables subscribers to watch movies, live television, shows and other favourite content anywhere and at any time.

According to a statement by the company, “Glo TV brings engaging, interactive and premium entertainment content through a rich bouquet of offerings including hundreds of live entertainment programmes, music, documentary, news, original shows, fashion, lifestyle, kiddies’ interest channels and over 1,000 videos as the company continues to partner with content providers to address the needs of more customers across social strata.”

The telecommunications giants, while expressing excitement and confidence over the roll-out of the service, stated that “With the launch of Glo TV, our network will cater to the content preferences of Nigerians across different socio-economic groups and offer them an exclusive opportunity to experience best-in-class TV content.”

This is not an overstatement because the company has perfected arrangements with many networks and content providers to offer its subscribers first-class contents to keep them informed, entertained and educated. For instance, subscribers who are news lovers and wish to follow international news as it breaks can catch up with news-on-the-go channels, including Aljazeera and France24, while subscribers who have an interest in documentary channels can watch CGTN and RT Documentary, among many others. Similarly, movie lovers have more than enough options from different genres to choose from. Glo TV video content offerings include; Thriller, Action, Adventure, Crime, Nollywood Family, Comedy, Yoruba Family, Igbo and Hausa Drama. Glo TV will also offer exclusive content and premiers to the delight of its viewers.

To ensure that it is a family platform, children’s interests are also well taken care of by Glo TV. Regular kiddies’ channels such as ZooMOO, English Club TV and Lollykids are on offer to give healthy entertainment and robust education to children of all ages. This will ensure that they are not only acquiring new knowledge, but that they are also adequately entertained in line with the best practices of television viewership.

Speaking at the launch of the service at Globacom head office in Lagos last Tuesday, Head of Web Sales, Ugochukwu Ibe, said: “GloTV will positively alter the television landscape in Nigeria as it will beam highly sought-after television contents to millions of subscribers via their laptops, desktops and mobile handheld devices.”

He added, “With GloTV on your mobile phone, you will have access to your favourite contents with you everywhere, including when you are travelling. Hence the user will not miss his or her programme of choice.”

According to Ibe, Glo has already sealed some deals with a number of partners to ensure that the television service constantly offers content and programmes that will appeal to all categories of subscribers across social demographics. This is to guarantee a thrilling experience for the subscribers.

Ibe stated further, “We are aware that fast and reliable internet is required to enjoy mobile TV contents. If the internet is slow, it takes more time to load the video contents and this can be annoying to users. With Globacom’s 4G data powered by Glo 1, subscribers are assured of a pleasant streaming experience.

“This exciting product is designed to ensure that access to television programming graduates from computer and television to include mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers and is available on the go and in real-time.

“We are playing a pivotal role in this regard so that as consumers globally are migrating into virtual worlds at an unprecedented rate and are exposed to newer opportunities, influences, and greater ease of doing business, Glo subscribers will also be availed the opportunities in the telecommunications market.”

To prove to subscribers that the taste of the pudding is in the eating, Globacom is offering the service free of charge to all its subscribers till September 30, 2021.

While loud applause and excellent compliments from all quarters have greeted the launch of GloTV, industry observers are not surprised that once again, Globacom has raised the bar with the introduction of GloTV. This is because the company has shown that innovation is in its DNA.

Globacom’s entry into the telecoms industry on August 29, 2003 was the game changer Nigerians had long awaited as tariffs came tumbling following the introduction of per second billing system. That should have sufficed as a selling point given the pull it had for subscribers, but Glo was out to make an unequivocal statement that it was (and still is) passionate about customer satisfaction. So, it also introduced the 2.5G technology, which offered GPRS with services such as multimedia messaging, mobile banking, mobile internet and BlackBerry, among other services that were hitherto not available in the country as other telecoms companies had operated on the 2G technology.

With these innovations, subscribers warmed up to the service provider and gave it a sobriquet, ‘the ever improving network.’

Glo has lived up to its pseudonym as it has consistently deployed its vast financial, technical and human resources to improve service delivery to consumers with a view to holding firmly to its rating as the network of preference for all categories of subscribers by providing premium service at a minimal rate.

Determined to raise the bar of telecoms service in the country and give its subscribers topnotch deliverables, Glo, in 2008, launched the third generation technology (3G Plus), thus scoring another first, as the pioneer of this technology which supports video calling, high-speed internet (HSI), mobile TV and video not only in Nigeria but in the whole of the West African sub-region. This has since been upgraded to the 4G technology.

Apart from regularly deploying the latest technology, Globacom has also consistently offered the best value for money by introducing great products and services for the robust calling and browsing experience of its subscribers. Some of the recent innovations are Borrow Me Credit, Borrow Me Data, Borrow for Others, Glo Berekete, Mega Data Plans, 22X offer, 777 magic number, 11/K second and Always On.

So, for Glo subscribers, life has never been better with the company’s offer of premium services at affordable tariff.

This is the secret of the success of Globacom. This is why subscribers find its services and products irresistible. As noted by Peter Drucker, father of modern management, companies exist not to make money but to create customers, adding that only companies that make customer satisfaction their focus last the distance. Since Globacom’s focus is on the customer’s comfort and not the wallet as evident by the launch of GloTV and the over one month free service, there is no doubt that the company is set to become a national and global institution.
