A development economist and former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Obadiah Mailafia has urged all Nigerians to give unity a trial.
The former official of the African Development Bank Group noted that this is imperative because there can never be two legal systems in a country.
He noted this during an interactive session held via Zoom on Sunday evening.
“I would say that we should all give unity at least a trial.
“After this, there can then be a free choice to make for realignment. Perhaps, a group may decide to join the other and so on. But, this process must be done on the basis of a referendum.
“This is because no country can two legal systems in a country in order to avoid disorderliness,” he said.
Mailafia attributed the poverty level in the country to the misplacement of priority and lack of empowerment for the women especially.
The former CBN deputy governor described women as the mothers of all nations and if treated shabbily, the whole nation would be at risk.
“The rate of poor is increasing. We are 100 million people living under the conditions of absolute poverty. It is the problem of priority. You have to prioritize. If you have a development framework.
“The most important is empowering people most especially women. We don’t hear about women empowerment.
“Open up SMEs, micro-businesses, artisans and works. If you treat the women shabbily understand that you are treating the mothers of the nation unwholesomely,” he said.
