Future belongs to those who hustle rightly —Babalola, CEO, DatJoblessBoi Media

Idowu David Babalola is better known as DatJoblessBoi (DJB) in the entertainment industry. Derided as “That Jobless Boy” in 2013 for his many BBM messages, he responded that he was “that jobless boy getting paid” and today, he sits atop DJB Media and Digital TV Broadcast Limited, as the CEO. In this interview by SAM NWAOKO, he speaks on what he does. Excerpts:

From ID Bragga to DatJoblessBoi… how would you describe the transformation? Tell us about the names.

Oh well, there is no transformation between both names. IDBragga is the nickname from my first name, Idowu and Bragga from an events and talent management company called BraggaCity Entertainment I co-founded with a childhood friend & brother back in the days. Datjoblessboi on the other hand is the brand name for my company which is into Public Relations, Media, Branding, Promotions, Awareness and Repertoire and Advertisements services from which I derived the acronym for my business name DJB Media & Digital TV Broadcast Limited.

What do you do differently from back then, looking back and reflecting on the beginnings?

What we do differently now, looking back and reflecting, is that our approach to how we deliver our services at DJB has grown much bigger and has a life of its own. It’s topnotch now; we have mastered our arts. We make sure our clients get world class value for their desired services. We make sure they get the best results and that has helped our business grow.

 What exactly do you do?

I am a celebrity publicist, blogger, entertainment executive and digital media entrepreneur. So, at DJB that is what we do with a panache that has kept us at the top.

What are those things you’d say have given you thrills on the job?

Wow! The fact that I can work and make money from anywhere around the world just from my mobile phone and the use of the internet at the comfort of my home, is it! These give me the thrills on the job every day.

How about the opposite? What disappointments can you recall that pierced your heart?

There is no work that doesn’t have its own disappointments. I’ve had lots of them that have really pierced my heart. But the major thing is that I have risen above these limits. I see every disappointment as blessings in disguise. I do not let them get to me.

Who are your clients… the ones you can boast of or about? Music artistes?

Our clients’ base is not just artists. We also provide services for influential personalities, high profile individuals, private and government sectors and non-governmental parastatals who desire the use of our services.

What keeps them stuck to you?

They are stuck to us because they know our services are the best in the whole of Africa; we know exactly what they want and we deliver beyond their imagination and expectations.

How would you want the government to help or intervene in the industry?

I would like the government to intervene in the industry by providing the needed facilities and funding for the media and entertainment industry to thrive in the country.

What are those things in the entertainment industry you would change if you were given the chance to serve as the Minister of Information and Culture?

Wow! Firstly, I will make Nigeria an attractive developed tourist country, a place where every nationality would always want to come to. I will build infrastructural facilities, halls and a filming location city that will encourage our artists and musicians for their movie and music videos productions. Moreover, I will bring more exposure to the Nigerian creative industry; I will encourage more private sector participation and philanthropists all over the world to invest into our nation.

Where is your favourite relaxation spot… where do you like to hang out?

My favorite relaxation spot is my home. I’m not really an outdoors person, I like to be indoors most times. I can stay at home for months without going out. So far there is food, internet and my mobile phone is sufficiently charged!

How about marriage? Who is the lucky woman or you’re still searching? What do you want or what do you like in a woman?

I like to keep my love life private; but talking about the kind of woman, she must be resourceful, homely, be like-minded, industrious and God fearing.

COVID-19 ravaged 2020 and has twisted a lot of things thereafter. What plans have you laid out for the future?

After Covid 19 ravaged 2020, we have to go back to our drawing board to restructure, strategise and implement new approaches to our policies and service delivery so that our clients can still have that topnotch outcome for their service requests.

What other things do you do at your leisure; are you playing any role when it comes to social or humanitarian work?

Currently I have an NGO called Babalola Idowu Foundation (BIF) which offers scholarship opportunities to the less-privileged, orphans, vulnerable but intelligent children that are in primary and secondary institutions across Africa to achieve their full potentials.

What would be your word for every other youth out there?

Well, what I have to say to every youth out there is that whatever you are doing, do it right with the fear of God. Things may come to those who wait, but the future belongs to those who hustle rightly.
