VICE chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, (FUNAAB) Professor Kolawole Salako has charged students and the newly-elected executive of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Students’ Union (FUNAABSU) to always promote the image of the university and avoid posting fake news online.
Professor Salako, while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the new executive members, expressed joy at the successful transition of the Students’ Union leadership.
He noted that though it was good to be engaged in journalism, they should endeavour to practise it in a positive way and not allow their breaking news to break the university.
He said: “The image of the university is paramount to me. So, you must always protect it. Negative news will not only dent the image of the institution, it will also affect your certificates and the management as a whole.”
He charged the new executive to play their roles effectively and ensure that they leave a good legacy behind, while commending the FUNAAB Independent Electoral Committee (FUNIEC) for conducting a violence-free election.
The VC applauded the outgoing executive led by Michael Oloyede, for working together with the management to ensure peaceful coexistence in the university, saying that, despite various challenges and misunderstandings, they performed very well.
In her remarks, the dean of Student Affairs, Professor Mobolaji Omemu, also congratulated the outgoing executive for the good job they did during their tenure, saying despite the challenges of COVID-19 at the beginning and almost throughout their tenure, they worked assiduously to project the good image of the university.
She however admonished the newly-elected one to always remember the students’ union as the representative of the entire student body in the institution, stressing that their positions should also serve as a training ground for true leadership.
