Commuters in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Tuesday faced a tough time getting to their destinations as traffic gridlock grounded vehicles as a result of the persisting petroleum scarcity.
Roads were blocked by vehicles queuing up around filling stations and struggling to obtain Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which has been short in supply in recent days in the territory.
Commuters from Karshi, Orozo, Jikwoyi axis were completely cut off from the city centre as the fuel queues in the areas spilt onto both sides of the Karshi-Nyanya expressway stopping the movement of vehicular traffic.
The queues forced the traffic gridlock to snake down the roads for kilometres.
Many of the commuters were forced to return home or abandon their vehicles on the road to hop on commercial motorcycles to continue on their journeys.
Commercial motorcyclists were quick to capitalise on the situation by hiking their price per passenger.
A trip from Jikwoyi to Kugbo along the Nyanya-Keffi expressway, which usually cost N200 shot up about N1,000.
The same condition was reported by commuters coming into the city from the Jos, Keffi, Mararaba axis, who also found themselves stuck in slow-moving traffic for hours.
Many commuters complained of frustration from the price hike while others lamented that they were forced to miss their work or other important engagements for the day.
Some of them blamed the authorities of the FCT authorities for not taking proactive measures to avoid such constant traffic stress, pointing at the Apo-Karshi road, which has been under endless construction for about a decade.
The construction of the road, conceived to divert traffic from the busy Nyanya-Keffi expressway way, has suffered delays due to a paucity of funds and engineering design defects.
Residents have now appealed to the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello, to do all that is necessary to complete the project and relieve them of daily traffic stress.
