The Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC), in Calabar, on Thursday, attributed 60 per cent of road crashes occurring on Nigerian roads in the last 10 years, to overspeeding.
The Zonal Commanding Officer, FRSC, ACM Benjamin Chidiebere Nkwonta, stated this while flagging off the ember months campaign in Calabar.
Nwonta said, “This is the reason why the FRSC discourages speeding on roads in the country.
Speaking on the theme, “Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travel and Enjoy Quality Road Experience, the FRSC Zonal Commander stated that the theme is apt and expressed hope that it would help to see reduce crashes and fatalities on Nigerian roads by 15 to 20 per cent.
“The theme for this year is apt at this time because from data speeding is responsible for over 60%of crashes recorded in the last 10 years in Nigeria, hence it is discouraged.
“Also night travels are prevalent during this time and the negative results have been overwhelming. This campaign aims to reduce by 15-20 per cent road traffic crashes and fatalities,” he said.
The Zonal Commander maintained that the Commission being a lead agency in traffic management in the country, “owes it a duty to protect citizens against negative road crashes in Nigeria, so as to safe lives along the nation’s highways.”
In his remarks, the Sector commander FRSC, Cross River State Command, Isaac Ameh, stated that the ember month campaign would complement other mechanisms used in stamping out avoidable road crashes.
Ameh stated that “FRSC believes that doing something concrete about how people use the road both as drivers, passengers is vital to correcting some of the fatalities during the ember months.”
In his remarks, the state deputy governor, Professor Ivara Esu, who spoke on behalf of the state governor, Professor Ben Ayade, pledged to support the campaign to ensure that the numbers of crashes on our roads drastically reduced, adding that road safety was a cardinal aspect of the security and development index.
Ayade stated that one of his administration policy thrust “is to ensure that the administration does everything humanly possible to reduce casualties on our roads.”
