From fun to professionalisation

What constitutes someone as being a good DJ has very little to do with what media format they choose, what type of music they play, or their level of technical skill. I feel like it doesn’t matter whether or not you use a sync button, the type of gear you use, or the genres of music that you choose to share. Good DJing is about adaptation, observation, and psychology.

I don’t mean to imply that DJing is anything but playing someone else’s music. And these days, it seems like everyone is a DJ. Just because everyone has access to a pencil and paper, it doesn’t make everyone an outstanding sketch artist.

So how can we feel fulfilled? How can you stand out amongst a crowd of competent DJs?

How a dying man was raised in Adamawa crusade — Bishop Zuga

  1. DO IT FOR THE MUSIC

The only way you’ll get anywhere as a DJ is to make sure your entire practice is about the music you want to share with others. If you want to do it to impress people or look cool, you won’t get far. If you’re interested in the music you’re collecting, and how to make people feel it, that’s what’s going to make you stand out.

  1. ENJOY

DJing can be the most fun job in the world. The crowd can tell when a DJ is truly in the zone, and they love it. Let yourself have fun, check your ego, follow your heart, and constantly learn how to better your technique. If you do that, you can’t go wrong.

  1. BE OBSESSED

Have an undying obsession with music. Soak in as many genres as possible, and learn to develop an ear for beat structure and timings. This will make it a lot easier when the time comes to blend and mix your madness into one big party jam.

  1. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Practice, practice, practice. Don’t expect to be a professional right out of the gate. A lot of DJs will jump straight onto the stage, without any skills to pay the bills. One sure way to stand out is to hone your craft as much as possible before your debut.

  1. MIX IT UP

Make mixtapes. As many as you can. Just press record and drop a solid 30-minute mix with no editing; just you, a mixer and two turntables or CDJs or a controller. Get some invaluable feedback from your mates – always make sure you ask for constructive criticism.

  1. BE RELIABLE, PROFESSIONAL AND ACCOUNTABLE

No one likes a DJ who’s underprepared for a gig. Make sure you’re at every gig at least 3 – 5 hours early to gauge the vibe of the crowd. Be thankful for the amazing job you’ve been given. You’ll rarely see any of the high-profile DJs complain off on social media because they are too busy creating a business and career. Keep your stuff tight and professional.

  1. LEARN TO SAY NO

It’s exciting, when the gigs start rolling in, to say yes to everything, but learning how to say no is something I strongly recommend. When you need to say no to something because your gut says run because it looks too good to be true, just do it. There is no shortage of stories about DJs being treated like garbage. If you happen to find yourself in a situation you don’t like, say no. Never sacrifice taking care of yourself and your wellbeing for a DJ set.
