Foundation targets 5 million Nigerians on human trafficking awareness

A faith based organisation, Symbols of Hope (SoH) Project, Nigeria has said it would be educating about five million Nigerians on the vices of human trafficking and irregular migration.

The Country Director of SoH project, Reverend Emmanuel Gabriel disclosed this in Abuja at the commemoration of the World Day against trafficking in persons with the theme: ”The Victims Voices Lead the Way.”

Reverend Gabriel said the organisation was targeting about 250 potential migrants to reach out to.

He said the Organisation provide psychosocial support and counselling to survivors of trafficking and returned migrants.

Reverend Gabriel said the organisation was able to reach 45 persons in 2020, adding that they have reached another 45 this year.

“We have about 25 in the line for the year. Annually, we have a targeted number but so far from the beginning of the project up until now, we have no fewer than a 100 persons who have been affected, we don’t only take care of returned migrants and survivors, we also take care of victims of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as well.

“As a faith based organisation, the Symbols of Hope and the Lutheran Church of Christ Nigeria is trying to bring them and restore their hope by putting them back on their feet again by providing livelihood support.

“We are also into providing special support and training for potential migrants once we see the signs that they are intending to migrate,” he said.

“This year, in collaboration with the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), International Organization for Migration and other relevant government agencies.

“We have agreed to come together and do it under one umbrella in order to draw the attention of Nigerians on the dangers of human trafficking and irregular migration,” he noted.
