Ayishat Afolabi Foundation has donated items including packs of noodles, sanitary products and a refrigerator to support an orphanage home in Lagos State, Compassionate Orphanage Home.
The donation drive was part of activities to celebrate the 59th birthday of the co-founder of the foundation, Kehinde Afolabi who also called for inclusiveness in the support for children raised without parents.
The foundation provides education for children of widows facing financial difficulties and provides linkages to justice regarding gender-based violence issues.
Speaking with pressmen, Afolabi said, “I am happy to offer this gift to these children to celebrate my birthday. The foundation is named after my mother and the goal has been to support orphans and the less-privileged.
“This gesture is the first of its kind and we will continue every year providing necessary materials for these children.”
Also, the deputy coordinator of the foundation, Foluke Ademokun, said the foundation, in the last ten years, has empowered several children and less-privileged homes across education, health and livelihood.
“The name Ajoke Ayishat Afolabi came from the mother of the celebrant who is a woman with excellence. The celebrant is a person who would not want his mother’s legacy to be destroyed. Mrs Afolabi, during her time on earth, was kind-hearted, a philanthropist and always looking out for other people’s families and as children, his and his twin have supported their mother in ensuring that her legacy lives on.”
Ademokun, however, appealed to the society and the government to intensify support for women and the less-privileged, stressing the need to domesticate laws that would safeguard them against any violence.
While receiving the items, the project manager of the orphanage home, Patricia Aseleri, said the gift was coming at a time of need considering all economic instabilities facing the country.
She said: “We are always here all day for the interest of the children and the gift would go a long way by lessening the burden of feeding the children.”
Aseleri who said the home currently houses about 53 children of different age and classes called for more support for children in orphanage homes as regards feeding, health and education.
