As part of measures to take indigent widows out of poverty in Kwara state, a sociopolitical grassroots organization, the Asiwaju Grassroots Foundation, has commenced an empowerment programme aimed at making them self reliant.
Speaking during the first edition of the round table discussion, tagged Effect of social media on internal security, a case study of #EndSARS, herdsmen, cybercrime and ritual killings in Ilorin on Wednesday, the national coordinator of the group, Comrade Ishola Olateju, said that 25 widows were selected to benefit in the first phase of the programme.
Olateju, who said that a sum of N20,000 was presented to each of the windows, added that the organization also empowered groups of students and artisans.
“A total number of 25 widows were presented with N20,000 each to engage in petty business in order to improve their socio-economic welfare.
“Ten secondary school students who have completed their ‘O’ Level education were awarded full scholarship to study courses of their choice to completion in any tertiary institutions where they get admission.
“Another set of beneficiaries include 25 persons that have completed their apprenticeship in various vocations such as catering, computer technology, tailoring, hairdressing. Working tools were presented to them”, he said.
The group’s national coordinator also urged Nigerian youth to stay away from fake news in order not to jeopardize the nation’s internal security.
“While the evolution of social media is commendable, the quality and the genuineness of the news must be of a high standard. We must stay away from fake news in order not to jeopardize the internal security of our country. Without any iota of doubt, the security of Nigeria is being threatened because of fake news and growing suspicion among all ethnic groups in the country
“Let me emphasize that no country can grow without the security of life and property of its citizens. Let me also quote my mentor on security: “No meaningful economic and industrial activity can thrive in an atmosphere riddled with rancour and crisis. Central to peace, in turn, is the positive productive engagement of the active working population in any society. But more importantly, we must keep the peace, promote national unity and cooperation, shun division and conflict generating behaviours and practices.
“In light of this, I will urge us all, particularly, youth, not to tear the fabrics of our unity as a country with the wrong usage of social media. Verify your news and use social media to promote national unity.
“There is an increasing death of professionalism in the media. The fall in the standard of education, the enveloping cloud of moral ineptitude, the erosion of media ethics and the combination of other factors have conspired to wipe off professionalism in the media.”
