Former Anambra governor, Chinwoke Mbadinuju, dies at 78

Published by

Former Governor of Anambra State, Chinwoke Mbadinuju, has passed away at the age of 78. The news was confirmed in a statement issued by his first son, Chetachi Mbadinuju, on Tuesday, April 11.

The statement revealed that Mbadinuju died at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness.

“With heavy hearts but utmost gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and associate, Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju, a former governor of Anambra State and elder statesman,” the statement read.

Mbadinuju served as governor of Anambra State between 1999 and 2003 but lost his reelection bid due to what some described as a gang-up against him by some political godfathers.

His tenure was marked by political upheaval, including killings, destruction of public institutions and industrial action.

Before venturing into politics, Mbadinuju was an associate professor of politics and African studies at the State University of New York.

He also served as the personal assistant to the governor of the old Enugu State, Dr Jim Chris Nwobodo, between 1979 and 1980, as well as the personal assistant to President Shehu Shagari between 1980 and 1983.

Mbadinuju obtained a BA in political science and a doctorate in government, and also earned a law degree from one of the best English universities. He was an editor of Times International.

The deceased is survived by his wife, Nnebuogo Mbadinuju, and their five children: Ada Mbadinuju (a medical doctor), Chetachi Mbadinuju (an entrepreneur), Nwachukwu Mbadinuju (an operations manager), Uche Mbadinuju, and Chima Mbadinuju.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the family. May his soul rest in peace.
