At least five persons have been confirmed dead between Tuesday and Wednesday in separate attacks involving two factional cult groups in Benue State.

The incidents reportedly took place in Makurdi, the capital city and Gboko, the trado-political seat of Tiv nation.

Our correspondent reliably gathered that four people were killed in Gboko in the incident which happened on Tuesday and lasted till the wee hours of Wednesday. One other person was said to have been killed in Makurdi.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that: “The first incident happened at Gbar Mka on Tuesday night when some boys suspected to be cultists fought. It resulted in the death of three people.”

The eyewitness who did not want to be mentioned added that another set of cultists at about 1.00 am on Wednesday stormed Iorkyaa Ako street in Gboko Central and killed a 21-year old young man.

“At the wee hours of Wednesday, precisely around 1:00 am we heard a loud noise and some people were banging on the door of a neighbour. When I peeped from my room, I saw several young men brandishing machetes and axes. They were hitting somebody on the ground,” the eyewitness said.

Meanwhile, in Makurdi, some young people suspected to be cultists clashed at North Bank, a suburb of Makurdi which led to the death of one person.

The State Command spokesperson, DSP, Catherine Anene, who confirmed the incident said that three persons have been arrested in relation to the incident in Gboko.

According to her, “the incident is confirmed and three suspects have been arrested in connection with this case. The investigation is still in progress.”
