•Police warn residents against acts capable of igniting fire
Goods and properties worth millions of naira have been lost to the fire incident at the popular Sango market in Ibadan North local government.
The incident which happened on Saturday night is coming barely one week after a similar incident occured at the popular Furniture maker outlet at Ire-Akari and Ologede area in Oluyole local government area.
The occurrence of fire incidents of recent has raised concerns among the residents of the Ibadan metropolitan area.
The Sango incident, as reliably informed started overnight after the close of the market.
The affected traders were recalled from home to face the herculean task of putting off the fire.
Our correspondent learnt that the magnitude would have been much of not for the swift intervention of the men of the State Fire Department.
One of the residents in the area said a call was put through to the men of the State Fire Service at Secretariat Agodi.
According to him, “They mobilised their men to the scene of the incident and were able to put off the fire even though the damage had been done.”
Some of the affected shop owners said they are now faced with rebuilding their shops and businesses, which according to them is their means of livelihood.
Tribune Online recalls that the State Police Command has expressed concerns over the reported fire incidents in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso was quoted in a statement as advising the residents to adopt the highest level of caution whenever dealing with combustible and other highly flammable objects.
It also described as disturbing the rate of negligence exhibited by individuals who store jerricans of fuel at places of residents/shops and even make calls around active fuel pumps and gas cookers.
The statement warned against bush burning and incineration of refuse at this period, advising that it must never be left unsupervised to avoid unnecessary escalation of wildfire.
