Financial games couples play (2)

After a year, Adetutu applied to an International art gallery to enable her to showcase some of her work. She was picked among 50 applicants. She did not say a word of it to Emeka, she told Emeka she was traveling to Lagos to visit her elder sister who was sick and would be staying with her for 2 weeks. Unknown to Emeka that Adetutu was going to an International Exhibition in Lagos.

Adetutu’s work of art stood out among the other exhibitors, earning her widespread recognition. The media and paparazzi hounded her relentlessly, bombarding her with requests for social media, television, and radio interviews.

Reluctantly, she agreed to most of them, always mindful of the possibility that her husband might stumble upon her interviews.

As the interviews continued, Adetutu began strategizing with her sister about the narrative she would share with her husband. Concerned for her sister, Adetutu’s sister had already taken the initiative to send numerous selfies of the two of them together at the gallery to Adetutu’s husband.

When Emeka received the pictures on his WhatsApp, he dismissed them, thinking that Adetutu and her sister were simply having fun. Unknown to him, the images were part of a bigger story.

Emeka’s phone rang, interrupting his thoughts, and he saw that it was his old friend Tunde calling. “Are you in town, bro?” Tunde asked. He had heard about the art gallery exhibition and was curious if Emeka had attended.

“Town? How I go dey town? And I no go tell you? Me I dey my village, going about my business,” Emeka replied.

“Bros, you no try o. How could you not support your wife on this momentous occasion here in Lagos?” Tunde questioned.

“I don’t understand you, Tunde. Have you been drinking again? It’s just the afternoon. Momentous occasion? Where? Who? When?” Emeka was bewildered.

Tunde sent him a screenshot of a news flash from a popular blog titled “Young Adetutu mesmerizes with her Art.” Emeka’s phone slipped from his hands in disbelief. His heart skipped a bit. This couldn’t be his Adetutu. He scrolled down to read the full story.

Out of 50 exhibitors from Nigeria, Italy, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Scotland, and South Africa, Adetutu, a native of Ondo State, had been selected as one of the top three exhibitors. Her artwork, which depicted African religion and heritage, left everyone in awe. In no time, all her pieces were sold out, impressing even the most influential figures.

Emeka couldn’t hold back his tears. He was still in shock, struggling to believe what he had just read. Why had his wife kept such a significant event and achievement a secret from him? Questions raced through his mind, leaving him feeling lost and helpless.

“Thank you, Tunde. I’ll call you back later,” Emeka managed to utter before ending the call. He couldn’t focus on anything for the rest of the day. He felt paralyzed, unsure whether to reach out to Adetutu or send her the link to the news flash.

He sat there motionless, lost in his thoughts, contemplating what this revelation meant for their relationship.

To be continued.
