FGM: White Truck Empowerment Initiative partners GMC, other for community outreach

Published by

The White Truck Empowerment Initiative in collaboration with Global Media Campaign (GMC) and the frontline have concluded plans for community outreach against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in July.

This was disclosed by Barr. Taiye Edah, Project Coordinator of the Initiative, stating that the team will visit different communities on the importance of pushing for FGM to be banned.

According to Eyimofe, a trained youth volunter intern for the initiative, suggested that grassroots support for an end to FGM will lead to an official ban.

Speaking out about the risks and realities of FGM, the initiative stated that the outreach will educate “girls and women on their right to decide what happens to their body, challenge the discriminatory reasons FGM is practised, Change traditions with the support of older generation, Tackle the secrecy that allows cutting to continue. In the old days, genital cutting was an initiation rite for girls, to prepare them for their future. The whole community would participate. But nowadays it’s become more controversial and it usually takes place discreetly at home.”
