The Federal government is targeting National Integrated Land Transport Policy as an enabler that would boost the efficiency of the industry.

Speaking on Thursday at the Kano State Policy Dialogue on Transport in Kano, the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali explained that the policy will create an integrated and sustainable multimodal transport system.

He said the Integrated policy will ensure efficient, competitive, integrated, private sector-driven, safe, secure, and sustainable world-class Land Transportation System that will meet the needs of a growing Economy and the people.

The performance/development index of economies around the globe, are graded on the effectiveness of their Transportation System and regulatory framework.

“In this wise, it is right to say that Kano State is towing the part of greatness for seeing the need to develop its Policy Framework that aligns with the processes needed for the development of a Policy document such as: identification of the relevant issues.

“States such as Lagos and Kano States have become trailblazers as they have recognised the need to provide a blueprint that will serve as a set of principles and ethos to guide their overall decision-making for an integrated and functional transport system.”

The Transportation Minister called on other States in Nigeria to also kick start the development of their own Transport Policy to stimulate a well-developed Transportation Sector for Nigeria.

In his address, Kano Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf said the transportation Sector has become imperative in view of the Kano Transport challenges which are akin to Lagos and other emerging Megacities in the country.

Represented by his Deputy Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, Kano being a commercial hub of Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa requires a comprehensive and integrated approach for the Transportation Sector to meet the modern-day Transportation reality.

“Kano state Government is committed to Developing a more balanced and sustainable transport system as encapsulated in its transport vision statement,” he noted.
