Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State has flagged off federal government Special Public Works Programme in the Rural Areas in the state and called on the beneficiaries to live up to expectations.

Speaking during the launching of the programme in Jos, Governor Lalong said President Mohammadu Buhari approved the initiative as a way of creating massive jobs at the lowest tier of the economy by maintaining critical public and social infrastructure at the rural base of the economy.

According to him, the programme was designed to mitigate the lack of job opportunities in rural areas through a short-term engagement of One thousand unemployed persons per Local Government Area for a period of three months.

“This laudable programme is also designed for the rehabilitation and maintenance of public and social infrastructure.”

The participants who are to be paid a monthly allowance have been recruited largely from the pool of skilled and unskilled persons resident in the rural areas of all the local governments.

He further pointed out that the selection of participants for the programme followed a broad-based engagement of various stakeholders cutting across government, civil society, religious and community representatives who ensured inclusivity, fairness and equity.

In his address, the chairman State Selection Committee of the Programme Hon. Rufus Bature said the selection was done irrespective of tribe, religious and political afflictions.

Hon. Bature pointed out that each local government area in the state will have 20 supervisors to ensure that there are compliance and adequate supervision adding that member of his committee has also volunteered to serve as supervisors in their respective local government to make sure that the programme is fully implemented.
