The federal government has handed about N10 billion irrigation facility containing over 3,000 hectares of land to the Jigawa State government for distribution to farmers in the state.
Speaking at the handing and taking over ceremony held at Yamidi village in Auyo local government area in the state, Governor Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar said the project initiated during the 2nd Republic was revived by President Muhammad Buhari when he re-laid the foundation of the project two years ago.
Badaru explained that the multi-beneficial project has reached over seventy-five per cent completion, and would be finalized before the commencement of this year’s irrigation farming.
The governor maintained that this facility would save farmers over N2.7 billion if they are to use water pumping machines annually.
According to him “with this over 3,000 hectares irrigation land, if put to use, over N32 billion would be injected into Jigawa State economy for only rice production.
He noted that the trimming by federal government is in collaboration with the World Bank.
Speaking while handing over the project, the Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu said the federal government has spent over 9 billion naira on the rehabilitation and extension of over three thousand hectares of irrigation land at Yamidi town.
He said the project was aimed at boosting food security and the economic well-being of the people.
He, therefore, called on small and medium farmers to make good use of the site to create jobs among unemployed youths.
The minister reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to boost agriculture to enhance food security.
Also speaking, the Emir of Hadejia, Dr Adamu Abubakar Maje commended President Muhammad Buhari and Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar for actualizing the project.
