FG distributes cassava planting materials, trains farmers in Edo, Katsina

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has distributed elite cassava planting materials in Edo and Katsina States.

Over 300 farmers benefited from the distribution of the improved cassava planting materials. The cassava planting materials distributed have the attributes of early maturity, pest and disease resistance and high yielding.

A capacity building of the farmers was also carried out to strengthen their technical capacity in the production and processing of cassava in Nigeria.

A total of 120 farmers, 32 local government areas across Katsina State and 80 farmers from eight local government areas of Edo State benefited from the distribution of the improved cassava planting materials.

The Director of the Federal Department of Agriculture, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Hajia Karima Babaginda, lauded the Federal Government unrelenting efforts in promoting cassava production, processing and marketing activities in Nigeria which are aimed at Nigeria sustaining her leadership as the largest producer of cassava in the world.

She implored the cassava farmers to utilise the cassava stems distributed to them by planting according to the new technologies disseminated and also encouraged them to share the planting materials and technologies with fellow cassava farmers at the end of the season.

Programme Manager Katsina Agriculture Development Program (ADP) represented by Alhaji Kabir Dabo commended the efforts of the federal government in promoting cassava production in Katsina State.

He also urged the farmers to plant cassava cuttings distributed to them on their farms according to the recommended cassava production agronomic practices and also extend the knowledge gained to other cassava farmers across the state.

The State Chairman, Nigerian Cassava Growers Association (NCGA), Katsina State Chapter, Alhaji Hassan Yunusa said “this is the first time in the history of inputs distribution been supported by technology transfer in Katsina State.”

Mr Wellington Omoregbon the State Coordinator of Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in his remark, said “the purpose of the distribution of the improved cassava planting materials in Edo State is to enhance the production of the crop and make it more profitable for farmers because of the high yielding status of the planting materials.”

The Commissioner for Agriculture of Edo State represented by Mr Princewill Igbinedon the Director of Extension Edo State ADP of Edo State acknowledged the long time good relationship as well as the partnership between Edo State ADP and Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and RTEP in promoting root and tuber crops activities over the years which has resulted in significant impact in the production of cassava in Nigeria and Edo State in particular.
