FCT Taskforce raids parking zones harbouring one-chance syndicates in Abuja

Published by

As part of its efforts to cleanse Abuja, the task team of the Command and Control Centre of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) raided and dismantled unauthorised parking zones housing one-chance syndicates and beggars in the city on Wednesday.

The team, consisting of the Nigerian Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Security (DSS), Immigration Service, Correctional Service, NDLEA, Directorate of Road Traffic Service (DRTS), Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Social Development Secretariat (SDS), and other relevant agencies in the FCT, also seized vehicles from various locations within the city centre for various traffic violations, including Bannex junction, Federal Secretariat, and surrounding areas.

Additionally, the team addressed environmental nuisances in the Bannex area that were allegedly utilized by suspected miscreants who targeted unsuspecting pedestrians during nighttime attacks.

Speaking during the operation, Mr Peter Olumuji, Secretary of the Command and Control Centre, FCTA, explained that based on credible intelligence received from relevant security and paramilitary agencies, the team disrupted the activities of one-chance syndicates that often use unpainted taxis and park in unauthorized areas in the city.

Olumuji emphasised that the raid is part of a comprehensive operation to ensure that residents of Abuja can move freely at any time while combating the menace of one chance and street begging.

He stated, “The enforcement team is determined to raid any location that accommodates indiscriminate parking. We have received reports about one chance, and the security agencies with us have provided credible intelligence on this issue. That’s why we are conducting these operations across the city to dismantle these unauthorized parking zones.”

He further explained the negative impact of nuisance beggars, stating that they can be used as a platform to gather information for criminal activities and contribute to public nuisance within the city centre.

“We have been carrying out this operation for the past few weeks, and we will continue because the feedback we have received from the public indicates that they appreciate the efforts of the FCT Administration. We are committed to this operation,” Olumuji added.

Deborah Osho, Deputy Director of Operations at DRTS, revealed that the team impounded at least 15 vehicles from different locations within the city centre due to various traffic rule violations, including the operation of rickety vehicles that should not be on the road.

She highlighted that most of the illegal parks create significant traffic obstructions as the operators divide and occupy major road corridors, including pedestrian pathways, thereby causing inconvenience to other motorists and road users.

“We conducted sensitization on Tuesday, urging commercial drivers to take their vehicles to the available taxi ranks within the city. However, today (Wednesday), they have resorted to forming illegal parks on the road corridors, obstructing traffic. This is why we are cracking down on them, to ensure they operate from approved taxi ranks and keep our roads free,” Osho stated.
