FCT Fire Service saves over N1bn in nine months —Opetunsin

THE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service has saved over N1 billion worth of property in the last nine months.

Assistant Comptroller General (ACG), FCT Fire Service, Julius Opetunsin, said this during the inauguration of enlightenment of secondary school students on fire disaster prevention, management and control.

Opetunsin noted that fire was preventable through appropriate techniques and behaviour which was why his organisation was targeting children in post-primary schools on the skills required for prevention and management of fire incidences.

“In line with the FCT Minister, Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello’s mandate to secure  the life and property of the FCT residents, the FCT Fire Service embarked on aggressive fire safety sensitisation to raise the consciousness of  residents on fire-related hazards.

“And since our children play strategic roles in this regard, this programme was drawn to include them in the awareness drive,” he stated.

According to him,  fire and rescue statistics was on the decline in the FCT, having reduced from 465 in 2018 to 255 between January and September, this year.

Representative of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), Mrs. Chinwe Ogwueleka, during her remarks, appreciated the FCT Fire Service for the opportunity given to the schools to enlighten the students on safety measures as regards fire outbreak.

She, therefore, pledged to give  the needed cooperation, adding that he was looking  forward to seeing the service go to the schools and help them form safety clubs.

“We are looking forward to it and we will give you all the necessary cooperation that you will need,” she assured.
