The Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) has predicted a crash in the price of maize following arrangements for the unveiling of the maize pyramid by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Kaduna.
MAAN also said that maize production in the country has increased to 20 million metric tons following the support by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Anchor Borrowers Program (ABP).
The National President of MAAN, Abubakar Bello while addressing journalists in Abuja, noted that there is adequate Maize in the country to meet demand both for consumption and industrial use.
According to him, demand by the poultry farmers is between 14,000 to16,000 metric tons and the current production is about 20,000 metric tons, noting that there is enough to meet the demands of the poultry farmers and even for consumption purposes.
He said with the showcase of the pyramid, the price of maize will further crash as it would stop maize merchants from hoarding the commodity adding that even the processors are willing to offtake from them.
Abubakar mentioned that the significance of the pyramid was to showcase that the association can produce enough maize for the populace, adding that it is also a way to show that farmers are able to pay their loans received under the ABP.
He also said that they want to show Nigerians that they can produce so much despite the insecurity challenges in the country.
He added that it is also a way of sending signals to processors that have been complaining that there is no maize in the country, that there is enough maize.
Speaking on the achievements of the association in 30 years of existence, Abubakar said they have been able to conduct maize surveys to Identify production constraints and research needs to enhance production adding that they also engaged in a government program co-named Presidential Initiative on Doubling Maize Production in Nigeria (PIDCOM) between 2007-2008 where they doubled maize from 6 million-12 million Metric tons.
