Family petitions IG over alleged release of attackers of Edo monarch

IRKED by the alleged shoddy investigations into dastardly assault on the Enogie (Duke) of the small town of Ukhiri, Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo State, His Royal Highness Godwin Aigbe by the police, the family members have made a passionate appeal to the Inspector of General of Police Muhammed Adamu to intervene into the matter.

The royal father who was savagely attacked by some hoodlums last December and has been in semi-consciousness, while the culprits have reportedly been let off the hook by the police.

In an open letter to the police boss, the wife of the traditional ruler, Mrs Stella Aigbe demanded proper investigations to be carried out in the case of the attempted murder/assassination of her husband which is also a case of arson, armed robbery, malicious damages.”

Mrs Aigbe, a lawyer disclosed that the Edo State Police was presently investigating the matter which may not be unconnected with land dispute while arrests had been made.

She added that the police have also recovered her husband’s mobile phone from the suspects whom she said gave a confessional statement of how they got involved in the attack but was however shocked to discover that the other culprits now at large ran to Abuja and brought the I.G. Monitoring unit led by one ASP Sokoto Aminu.

She alleged that Aminu took over the case file from Edo State Police Command and release the suspects who were detained on court order.

Also, a letter from the chamber of P. T. Osazee to the IG on the same matter expressed shock: “There is no justification whatsoever in their action in ordering the Edo State Police Command headquarters, Benin City, who were on top of the matter and yet investigation relating to the case has not been concluded and they are ordering the immediate transfer of the entire case file to their office in Abuja with those suspects the court has already remanded to police custody.”

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawal Jimeta denied the allegation, noting that none of the suspects had been released by the police.

He, however, conceded that he was aware that there was a team Abuja who were in the state over the incident.
