Tragedy was averted at the Abuja airport, on Sunday, when a Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) official, identified as Ajani, successfully resuscitated a dying passenger.
The passenger who collapsed while about to board an Air Peace flight from Abuja was said to have been given emergency resuscitation following the quick intervention of Mr Ajani who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the passenger before the arrival of the medical team.
While confirming the development, the spokesperson for FAAN, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, however, used the opportunity to urge the general public to always focus on saving lives instead of recording with phones for hits on social media.
A statement signed and issued by Yakubu explained that contrary to certain reactions which followed a video making the rounds on social media, that the FAAN official actually performed the first aid function before the medical team arrived shortly after to administer first aid treatment and subsequently evacuated the passenger to the Airforce Base clinic.
She condemned what she called the total disregard for privacy as people videoed and broadcast the incident and numerous others instead of focusing on saving lives which should be the proactive thing.
While urging passengers to avoid threatening medical officials or intimidating them in situations like this, Yakubu declared: “FAAN will like to use this opportunity to appreciate feedbacks we are getting to drive and improve our processes. We appeal to stakeholders to always be orderly and proactive in the face of emergency situations as on that day, a Port Health officer on duty was intimidated and hindered from assisting the sick passenger.
”Interference, threats and agitations only undermine the focus on saving lives, and further slowing emergency response process. Additionally, we also do appeal that please, the privacy of any distressed person(s) in our facilities be always respected by desisting from just merely watching, and recording such persons for public broadcast. To succeed in resolving emergencies, we do need more hands on deck, than on phone.”
