FAAN begins deployment of new technology across four airports

DETERMINED to ensure seamless facilitation of international travels, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has started deploying the recently acquired new technology across the international airports across the country. Some foreign carriers have already been integrated into the new technology.

The new technology called Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS) is an improvement on the previous one called the Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE).

The CUPPS is an IT solution that enables multiple airlines, service companies, or other users to use a uniform electronic interface for sharing physical check-in.

Speaking on the feat, the Managing Director of FAAN, Captain Rabiu Yadudu said  the new technology and other facilities would be deployed in the five international airports, in addition to self service Kiosk,departure control and baggage reconciliation systems and Flight Information Display System.

While saying the items spelt out in the contract had improved package and soft ware with a much wider coverage for all Nigerians, Yadudu declared: “The previous system we had is CUTE, the Common User Terminal Equipment but we now went for the upgrade, new technology of the CUPPS: Common User Passengers Processing system, this was the new technology since 2009 and now 11 years later FAAN and Nigeria are using the CUPPS system and for five airports.”

The old passenger facilitation system collapsed some few months ago when the contractor suddenly pulled out forcing airlines had to embrace manual and handwritten issuance of boarding passes and bag tags for passengers leading to of delays in facilitation.

While the problem lasted, foreign airlines had to rely on their own system to relieve passengers of the stress of waiting long hours on the queues as a result of the disruptions.

In her comment, Manager, South West Airports and Airport Manager, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Mrs Victoria Shinaba said the bad experience of the last few months by passengers would soon be a thing of the past as some foreign airlines have already been integrated into the system.

Her words: “We are able to bring on board KLM, Air France and by the grace of God all the other airlines will join and we will go back to how we can enjoy improved and better quality service.”

Meanwhile, the FAAN MD has promised to pay all outstanding deductions and entitlements of the workers in the organisation between September and December, 2021.

The deductions and entitlements include: the remittance of cooperative deductions, furniture grant outstanding gratuity, consequential salary adjustment, actuarial valuation and stipends for staff in Kaduna and Jos.

This resolution came at the end of the meeting between FAAN Management and the leadership of the Unions in FAAN on September 3, 2021.
