Expert decries poor standard of educational counselling in Nigerian schools

Published by

An education expert and international consultant for education, Dr Akingbade Akinkunmi, has decried the poor standard of educational counselling in Nigeria’s colleges and secondary schools.

Speaking in an interview with Tribune Online, the education expert, who is also the Chief Value Adder(CVA) of Bigger international Consult, a professional outfit that specializes in educational consulting services to students in Nigeria and abroad bemoaned the shortage of motivated, qualified educational Counsellors, with experience and expertise, who are delighted to help students for their higher education in order to take right decisions for prospective future by choosing right institutions and right courses.

According to Dr Akinkunmi, the role and the importance of educational counsellors in schools can not be underestimated.

ln his words, he said “worldwide, there are many degree programmes students can follow after graduating from the high schools. If a student is looking for a suitable course or programme and you want to make a sense of all the information about the possible destinations, universities, courses and programmes, a student counsellor is highly essential. It is important to get in touch with a student counsellor who has a good understanding of all the important facets of choosing a study. So that he can guide the student in the decision-making process.

“The absence or shortage of experienced and well-motivated student counsellors who can apply tests to identify students interests, aptitudes and abilities in Nigerian schools is really affecting the quality of graduates we produce in Nigeria tertiary institutions,” he said.

Speaking further, he blamed some parents who impose a course of study or programme on their children adding that this trend amongst educated parents does not help the prospective future of a student.

Dr Akinkunmi, a perceptive educator, also called on the Federal government to declare a state of emergency on education in Nigeria, because of the fallen standard of education brought about by lack of enough funding, motivation for teachers in colleges and tertiary institutions coupled with prolonged strike and industrial actions by University lecturers.
