Encomium as New York library honours Chimamanda Adichie

Social media was recently awash with praises for Nigerian award-winning writer and feminist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, since the New York Public Library (NYPL) honoured her for her work.

Adichie was honoured alongside Tina Brown, Jonathan Lethem and Darren Walker.

The honour was in commemoration of the NYPL 125th anniversary, and also the life and legacy of the late Vartan Gregorian.

The honour was bestowed on the awardees during the annual gala to honour individuals who have distinguished themselves in the  fields of arts, culture, letters and scholarship. And by the honour, they have been named Library Lions.

By the virtue of honour, Adichie now belongs to the league of world leaders and writers like Margaret Atwood, Nelson Mandela, Steve Martin, Martin Scorsese, Zadie Smith, Gloria Steinem and Oprah Winfrey who have been honoured by the library in the past.

As of the time of writing this report, Adichie’s social media handles, especially her verified Facebook page, has been satiated with thousands of praises, comments and reactions.

Gloria Azuike noted that she is always proud of Adichie. “You are the reason I named my daughter after you. Keep soaring and flourishing.”

Oluwakemi Bamgbade wrote, “Noble Prize in Literature beckons soon.”

Mims Julius noted that Adichie is an icon to reckon with in the art world. “You’re an inspiration to me and many out there.”

Okafor Anthony stated that Adichie being among those who were honoured by NYPL is a great feat every writer wants to achieve. “You’re truly great and obviously more are in the offing.”
