Emir of Dass stresses need for better remuneration, adequate security cover for working Journalists in Nigeria

Published by

Emir of Dass, Alh Usman Bilyaminu Othman has stressed the need for working Journalists in the country to be adequately remunerated by their employers in order to be able to perform their responsibilities with fairness and objectivity.

The Emir made the call while addressing members of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ) who paid him homage in his Palace in Dass to brief him on the preparations for the 2020 Press Week.

Usman Bilyamin Othman also called on security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that Journalists are adequately protected while going about performing their professional function of seeking out stories to dish out to the general public.

The Emir who is the Grand Patron of NUJ said, “you are playing a vital role in the public, you are risking your lives in order to get people informed, educated and entertained. Your roles in the society cannot be overemphasised.”

He also said that “where people are running away from, you are running there, where danger is imminent, you put your head, you stick out your neck to get out of the situation, vital information that will do good to humanity. Your job is a selfless one and I salute your courage.”

“In this period of insecurity and uncertainty, you have remained committed and dogged in your reportage of the situation, this is very encouraging. You can do more by adding advocacy to what you are doing,” he also said.

The Emir then admonished Journalists not to relent in telling the public the truth no matter how bitter it is, warning, however, that, “you have to be fearless, courteous, courageous, objective and professional as you do what is expected of you. Society relies on you for accurate information.”

Briefing the Emir earlier, Chairman of Bauchi State Council of NUJ, Comrade Umar Said said that the 2020 Press Week is aimed at self-assessment of members in order to knock what is needed to be done to remain on course and focused.

He added that during the course of the week, outstanding members will be recognised and honoured to serve as a morale booster to them and encouragement for others to do better in the line of duty.

The NUJ Chairman commended the fatherly role of the Emir saying that the NUJ has always enjoyed his counsel and useful advice which have helped in the performance of their professional duties.
