Electoral bill: House in tumult over controversial clauses

For the second time in the day, Legislative activities at the House of Representatives was halted as some aggrieved members threw caution into the winds and exchanged physical bout over contentious clauses in the Electoral Act amendment bill.

Trouble started when the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ahmed Wase ruled in favour of the few lawmakers who voted against electronic transmission of election results during the Committee of the whole.

The aggrieved lawmakers who centre their frustrations against the high-handedness of the presiding officer resolved to protest against his position by calling on the Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila to take over proceedings.

When the Majority Leader, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa moved a motion for the House should revert to plenary since they couldn’t conclude the clause-by-clause consideration of the report, majority of the lawmakers shouted ‘No’.

In the bid to quell the tensed environment, Hon. Gbajabiamila who took over the session announced that the INEC Chairman and NCC Chairman are to brief the House on clause 52 of the Electoral Bill.
