Election: Vote candidates based on competence, Edo group urges electorate

A Group, the Concerned Edo Citizens, on Monday called on Edo voters to carefully scrutinise the candidates for the March 18 house of assembly election and vote based on competence and capacity to deliver good governance.

The spokesman of the group, Comrade Solomon Idiogbe, who made the call in Benin at a press conference, harped that the elections should be about voting people that had the capacity to carry out legislative duties that would develop the state.

This was just as he condemned those he said were pursuing personal political vendetta of impeachment of Governor Godwin Obaseki, warning that, such a venture it could lead to a crisis even before the elections.

According to him, “the issue of impeachment as being bandied around by some political leaders and their supporters could potentially lead to crisis even before the elections. This will distort the existing peace in our dear state and we all know that there can never be progress without peace. We condemn in all ramifications and in strong terms those in the bandwagon of troubles who are propagating impeachment agenda or negative plans even before the elections. We are calling on Edo people to declare the propagators of impeachment politics persona non-grata in the state because a progressive Edo state is dear to us all not crisis”.

Idiogbe said his group “support the smooth transition of government to government, which is from incumbent to whoever shall be elected come 2024 through democratic process. Therefore, we must be supportive of peace to avoid another lockdown of the King’s Square and the House of Assembly as we have often seen in recent past.

“We have carefully taken a look at the policies and programmes of the governor even though some of us are among his fiercest critics. We implore Edo people to take a keen and sincere look at the governor’s policies and programmes and more importantly be fair in judging him. We make bold to say that haven x-rayed the projects, policies and programmes, we are convinced that the governor may not have done badly”, Idiogbe submitted.

The group therefore called on Edo citizens to come out in large numbers to cast their votes for their preferred candidates at the election.
