Ekiti united players protest over unpaid salaries

Players of Ekiti United football club on Friday took to the streets of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital protesting over the irregular payment of their salaries and match bonuses.

The players who appeared very gloomy carried various placards with inscriptions bearing their minds and agitations.

Some of the inscriptions were, ‘Our Welfarism is very bad’, We want our salaries to be paid on time’, ‘Pay us our match bonuses and F.A cup bonuses’, among others.

Speaking with journalists, some of the players claimed that the government was still owing then ten months of match bonus as well as FA cup bonus.

The players also lamented poor welfare packages and ill-treatment to the team by the ministry of sports.

They disclosed that their recent accident involving the team bus which almost claimed their lives due to persistent mechanical fault was a fall out of the poor treatment of the players.

But when contacted, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Michael Awopetu said the demonstration from the players was for improved welfare packages and not for unpaid salaries.

According to him, “It is not a protest but a way of asking for improved welfare. The secretary of the club Deji Olowolafe will be able to give you more update.

“But the issue is, their salaries are up to date. The other issue is the payment of match-winning bonuses which management promised to start paying at the end of the season. These are the issues raised.

“We are not owing them for two years salaries. We have been keeping the boys together.”
