The candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the just concluded Edo Governorship election, Mabel Oboh, has condemned her counterpart in the Action Democratic Party, ADP, Lucky Emanuel Iboi, for challenging the re-election of Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, saying that the move is undemocratic and against the wish of the Edo People.
ADP, it would be recalled, had on Monday filed a petition at the Tribunal, challenging the declaration of Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the winner, on the ground that the governor submitted fake or forged certificate and also participated in the primaries of both the PDP and the All Progressive Congress, APC.
In a press release issued in Benin on Wednesday and titled: “People Living in Glass House Don’t Throw Stones”, Oboh, who came fourth at the election described the ADP’s petition as “an opportunist move”.
“What do they think they are doing? Edo people made their choice which must be respected. Moreover, the peace and tranquillity that has descended on the Edo State should be allowed to remain. The election is not a do or die affair,” she submitted.
The ADC candidate added that what baffled her most was the fact that the ADP candidate had already congratulated Governor Obaseki after he was declared winner, and wonder why the same person would later file a petition, alluding that the ADP candidate was merely ” looking for cheap publicity and becoming over-ambitious.”
“This move is not the right way to achieve democracy. I contested for the governorship position under my party ADC and I don’t actually recall meeting ADP and the other parties that are threatening to challenge the election result at any stage on my campaign trail. It will be very interesting to know how ADP and others got their votes in the first place,” Oboh noted.
According to her, “every honourable contestant in the Edo 2020 elections should show honour and dignity and allow Edo to remain happy. Any person that has the interest of the state at heart should either get involved in the immediate development of the state or wait until 2024 to re-contest. That is not to say that the contestants who can contribute to the development of Edo state should not be given the opportunity to do so.”
Oboh contended that what the state requires at the moment is for all hands to be on deck to make her heal again, mostly, after the warring which characterised the politicking, stressing that “Edo must move on. Although the state is still celebrating, There is much to do and the time is now. No distractions are needed.”
