Edo State acting chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Col. David Imuse has expressed confidence that the congress will be peaceful and devoid of rancour.
The congress holds against the backdrop of the purported endorsement of Imuse for the chairmanship position by the top leadership of the party at a caucus meeting on Thursday in Benin, an action which did not go down well with the Edo State vice-chairman (Edo Central), Chief Francis Inegbeneki who signified his intention to contest for the top position.
Inegbeneki dispelled rumours that he has stepped down for his opponent, noting that the consensus arrangement which the party used in the ward and local government congresses on the state will not work today as he is “fully in the race to win.”
The Edo Central leader dispelled rumours making the rounds in APC circles that he has stepped down for Imuse. The chairmanship position is zoned to Edo central where both candidates hail from.
He said: “I am here to set the record straight and therefore I wish to state emphatically that I am still in the race.”
Imuse, however, countered, insisting that he is not afraid of a free and fair contest, noting that there will be a congress and was very sure of winning.
He added: “There will be a congress. There’s no imposition. At the end of the day, it will be clear that one man cannot be larger than the party. We shall see.”
A top party member who would not want his name in print however faulted Inegbeneki’s move, noting that the choice of the acting chairman by the caucus was due to the earlier resolution to return all officers who were resolute during the crisis which witnessed the exit of Governor Godwin Obaseki and other members to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
