Edo 2020: PDP says AA has no petition before tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, on Monday, told the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that the Action Alliance (AA) which earlier filed a petition before the panel that the party, in the fave of the law, had no petition whatsoever, having to file an application for pre-hearing notice.

AA and four other political parties are before the tribunal challenging the outcome of the September 19 Edo State governorship election won by Governor Godwin Obaseki of the PDP.

When the matter came up for pre-hearing, on Monday, counsel to PDP, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, contended that the petitioner had abandoned it the petition for failing to file for pre-hearing notice as stipulated by the Electoral Act 2010 as amended

He said: “The tribunal has no jurisdiction to entertain the petition and we urge the tribunal to dismiss the application. We didn’t receive the petitioner’s reply to activate the pre-hearing by applying for the issuance of the pre-hearing forms.”

Counsel to AA, Stephen Osaigbovo, however, objected to the position of PDP saying the petitioner had not abandoned his petition.

Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Abdulrazaq Abdulkareem adjourned to Friday, December 11, for ruling.
