E- WASH: Solution to numerous challenges confronting water sector ― Niger govt

Niger state government has explained that, with the Effective Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (E-WASH) project, the solution to the numerous challenges bedevilling the water sector is inevitable.

The State’s Commissioner for Water Resources and Dams Development, Malam Yusuf Suleiman, made the disclosure adding that water issue was one thing that no state government can resolve alone, stressing that there has to be a multi-sectoral solution by all the stakeholders, ” if we really want to succeed”.

While making this known during the second Knowledge Café (Mu Gana) interactive programme of E-WASH, held at Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna, he said “when I met with the E-WASH team on my assumption of office a few months ago, I knew that the project which is all-encompassing is the best thing that could ever happen to the water sector if it’s fully implemented.

According to him, the provision of water was capital intensive and as such, the sector must partner with relevant organizations both within and outside the country especially the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) E-WASH programme”.

He, however, expressed his appreciation to all those who were contributing to ensure potable and accessible water service delivery in the state, particularly the WASH Champion members in parts of the state, adding that his ministry was ready to synergize with people who were passionate about water service delivery in the state.

Earlier in his remarks, a former Secretary to the Government of Niger State(SSG) and WASH Champion, Mr Daniel Clifford Shashere promised to work alongside the ministry of water resources and the state’s Water board to actualize their mandates.

Meanwhile, there were presentations from heads of various units of the state’s water board, with the lead presentation made by a renowned expert in the sector, Engineer Inuwa Musa Kuta who talked on the topic, “Sustainable Water Resources and Sanitation Management: A Panacea for Job Creation”.
