Dollars video: Group calls for Interpol, NIS vigilance to prevent Ganduje’s escape from Nigeria

A Civil Society Organization known as the Movement Against Corruption in Nigeria (MACIN) has urged Interpol, the Nigerian Immigration Service, and other relevant agencies to closely monitor the former governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, due to alleged plans to flee the country in order to escape arrest over the $5 million video scandal.

During a press conference in Kano, MACIN’s lead Convener, Comrade Kahin Dukan, also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevent individuals with corruption allegations from seeking refuge in his new administration and undermining the investigation and prosecution of the former governor.

MACIN expressed concern over the ongoing investigation into Abdullahi Ganduje, who was captured in several videos allegedly accepting kickbacks from contractors executing various projects in the state.

The issue has been ongoing since 2018 when it was first reported by the DailyNigerian Newspaper. The Kano State House of Assembly established a committee to investigate the matter, but loyalists of Ganduje sought a court injunction to halt the investigation, which was successful.

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission initiated its own investigation in 2019 but suspended it due to Ganduje’s immunity as governor.

The commission recently reopened the investigation and presented a report from forensic experts confirming the authenticity of the video clips. However, Ganduje and the All Progressives Congress (APC) publicly declared that he would not honour the commission’s invitation.

According to MACIN, Ganduje has been employing delay tactics in court to prevent his arrest or investigation regarding the allegations. He has obtained a court order to restrain the Kano Anti-Corruption Commission, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Police from taking any action against him.

The organization called on Ganduje to respect the country’s laws, including the Kano State Anti-Corruption law, and submit himself for investigation in order to allow justice to prevail. MACIN expressed concerns that Ganduje’s actions could be interpreted as an indirect admission of the allegations.

Additionally, MACIN urged President Tinubu to distance himself from the alleged $5 million video scandal involving Dr Ganduje, in order to prevent Nigeria from being labelled as “fantastically corrupt” by the international community.
