Doctors Without Borders (Médecins sans frontières) has called on Nigerians not to discriminate or stigmatize children with NOMA.
The leader of the organization, Dr Shafiu Isah, who made the call in a workshop in Sokoto State over the weekend noted that stigmatizing or discriminating against them causes them pain, trauma and disgrace.
Dr Shafiu further explained that NOMA which is common among children under five years start as inflammation of gums similar to mouth ulcer.
He however disclosed that NOMA is preventable and curable if early detected.
Dr Shafiu said NOMA which is the disease of the poor is mostly caused by malnutrition, poor oral hygiene, untimely or skipping immunization.
He advised parents on feeding their children with a balanced diet, observing oral or general hygiene and complying with timely immunization.
He added that the aim of the workshop is to sensitize the health workers about NOMA so that they will take the enlightenment campaign to the grassroots.
He craved the indulgence of the media to be in forefront of the campaign, saying he is overwhelmed by the way media have been enlightened people on the disease.
