DIY beauty hacks worth trying

As we find ourselves adjusting to our new normal,  all we need are some beauty hacks and tricks to make our lives easier.

However, the urge to spend all day in pyjamas is too strong. But this enforced isolation could actually be an opportunity to hone your style. No commute means extra time to devote to curating outfits, plus, there are no onlookers – you’re free to experiment in the safety of your own home without any fear of judgement.

Perfect your beard: This isolation period is the best time to let your beards grow if you are going for a new one. Have a goal of what you want the beard to look like and keep it in mind. If in one or two weeks, you feel the hair is taking over your face and neck, light maintenance should help. To avoid itching, wash your beard while washing your face. Also, moisturise it with beard oil. Note that just like the hair on your head, your facial hair needs to be regularly washed too.

Stay away from hair dryers/straighteners: Too much heat in the hair can rob your hair of oil, thereby causing dryness in the hair. This may dry the skin of the head and even cause dandruff. In addition, the hair texture can be damaged and the scalp can become itchy. It is advisable to step back from the blow dryer, straightener and curling iron. This will preserve condition and oil in your hair and it will look better.

Give yourself a home manicure: It is time to remove old polish, cut, buff, file and apply a new nail polish, afterall, your hands deserve some tender loving care as well.

Try out new styling tricks: Use this time at home to experiment with statement accessories. What colours do you want to try and mix/match? Can you really wear suspenders all day? How heavy is that earring you have been admiring? There is no time like now to find out.

Up your skincare game: Firstly, eat your way to better skin. Foods high in beta-carotene such as carrots, broccoli, sweet potato and so on are powerful antioxidants that protect against cancer and aging. You can also test out new formulas and see what works for your skin. In addition, don’t forget about body care. With social distancing, you won’t expose the world to how you might smell as a result of products combination, so feel free to apply and reapply and enjoy the waiting game.

Try makeup hacks: Whether you are looking to tackle the cat eye or finally figure out how to contour and highlight, this is a good time to experiment. There are little tricks you can use that will make applying cosmetics much easier and ensure that you always have the look you are going for. To try them, go on youtube; there are over a thousand hacks waiting for you there.
