To improve the standard of education in Nigeria, Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has called on influential alumni of schools and various institutions to contribute their quota leveraging on their privileged positions.
Senator Omo-Agege made the call while speaking at the Diamond Jubilee Celebration & 100 Million Naira E-Library and Administrative Block Fund Raising Ceremonies of Old Boys Association (SAGOBA) of Saint George’s Grammar School, Obinomba, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State held at the school premises.
Omo-Agege, who is an Old Boy of Saint George’s Grammar School Obinomba, urged all and sundry to engage the instrumentality of government to ensure the school, which has produced great men and women in various fields of endeavours, to actualise its objectives.
He expressed gratitude over the numerous turnarounds that had taken place in the school environment, so far, promising to erect a storey building of 12 classrooms, as well as a Dining Hall and 100-bed space hostels for both male and female students.
He urged the present executive of SAGOBA to judiciously use the funds realized to ensure a massive turnaround of the school, just as he charged the students to emulate great feats the old students have made, assuring them of greater heights if they took their studies seriously.
The Chairman of the occasion, Chief John Ehikwe, who was the first Senior Prefect of the school, expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the school in spite of its little beginning.
“We need to celebrate this great citadel of learning which started in 1960 like a twinkling little star. This inestimable jewel called St. George’s College, Obinomba has over the years, moulded individuals who today occupy enviable positions in various fields of human endeavour.
“It is needless to bore you with a compendium of nationally and internationally-acclaimed professionals, scientists, and the who-is-who in private and public establishments produced by this college, whose accomplishments have taken the world by storm,” he averred.
He appealed to the government and its agencies, private establishments, the Diocese, Old Students of the institution and other kind-hearted individuals to support the school to keep the flag flying and for God to keep most of them alive to witness the Platinum Anniversary.
In an address by yhe National President of SAGOBA, Engr Cosmos Nwanwene, he said the school turned 60 in 2020, but could not celebrate because of COVID-19, thereby thanking God for making the Diamond Jubilee a reality.
Engr Nwanwene enumerated the achievements recorded by his executive to include the ongoing rehabilitation of the assembly hall, remodelling of the front fence, the design for the main entrance and the institution of a comprehensive insurance policy for interested SAGOBITES which has been extended to their spouses, among others.
While saying that the inventor of the fastest computer in the world as of today, Dr Philip Emeagwali, is an old boy of the school, Nwanwene said his executive has completed the design of a N100million Administrative Building and E-Library for the school.
Some of the old students, who were honoured with awards for their contributions to the overall development of the school and others, included Chief John Ehikwe, Architect Ben Neye Akogo, Pastor Ifeanyi Agbeyeke, Engr. (Prof) Amazing Walter Otunyo, Sunday Andrew Omolu and Dr Billy Agha.
Others were Engr. Amuchi GOC, Prof Abel Nze Onunu, Sir. Fidelis Tilije, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Babatunde John Kwame.
