Deploy power to enforce democratic order, Obi urges Labour

The Nigerian Labour Congress has been urged to utilize its strength and ensure that Nigeria maintains law and order.

In a post on his X handle, 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate Mr. Peter Obi emphasized that while the police invitation to the NLC president was routine, it is crucial for the Labour Union to oppose any actions that undermine proper procedures and threaten the country’s democratic integrity.

The post reads in part:

“The anxiety generated by the Nigeria Police’s invitation to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Joe Ajaero, for an interview should not be surprising given the critical position he holds as leader of the nation’s workforce.

“The NLC serves as an intermediary between the Federal Government and various labour disputes and national interest issues. Given this role, Mr. Ajaero represents an umbrella organization that should be informed of the authorities’ approach and methods.

“The alleged infractions listed in the invitation letter circulating on social media are serious, and there is no clarity on whether these allegations pertain to personal conduct or responsibilities as the undisputed leader of the NLC.

“Extreme caution must be exercised in handling this issue. It is not unexpected that the government might employ autocratic methods to suppress labour as a potential opposition force.

“Invitations like the one extended to Ajaero are anticipated. However, the rule of law and legal standards should be upheld. Labour should leverage its strengths and powers to preserve democratic order and integrity,” stated the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election.
