A number of executed landmark projects have been outlined as part of the activities to mark the 14th Combined Convocation ceremony and the 30th-anniversary of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Delta State.
Students who graduated between 2019 and 2021 are eligible to participate in the ceremony which had been put on hold since 2020 following theglobal lockdown occassioned by the Covid-19 scourge.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, made these known on Monday at a World Press Conference to mark the 30th anniversary of the university held at the permanent site, Abraka.
Flanked by the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Professors Mrs Rosemary Okoh (Admin), Ochuko Anomoharan (Academic) and the Provost of the school, Oleh Campus, Prof. S. O. Uwaifo and the Registrar, Mrs Rufina Ufiofio, among others, Prof Egwunyenga, said the institution has moved from the initial population of fewer than 1,000 students in 1992 to 30,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
According to the parasitologist and public health consultant, the citadel of learning can now boast of 12 faculties, over 85 departments, over 100 academic programmes, 27 directorates and research centres.
He said when he assumed office on December 2, 2019, he had set out to motivate the workforce, pursue innovation, strengthen academic and administrative units and improve the revenue base of the institution which he has so far modestly achieved.
These, he said, had brought about the institution, in 2021, emerging 14th Best University in Nigeria, Second-best in South-South, Fourth-best State University in Nigeria, Second-best University with the highest number of professors in Nigeria and Fifth most efficient State University nationwide.
He listed the Faculty of Pharmacy Complex, Access Link Roads to Faculty of Pharmacy, Animal House and Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts Complex, Department of Nursing Science Extension, Educational Technology Building and laying Foundation Stone of the Faculty of Management Sciences Complex as some of the projects to be inaugurated on Saturday, April 30 which is slated for the convocation proper.
