The students, staff members and management of De Ayo International College, Ibadan, one of the Oyo State accredited outstanding private secondary schools in the state, has held the 20th anniversary of the college.
The epoch event, which was held on Wednesday drew dignitaries from all works of life across the country to grace the occasion.
The founder of the college, Dr Mrs Ayoyinka Babatunde, a seasoned educationist who taught in public secondary school for many years before her venture into private school business management, expressed fulfilment and joy in her involvement in the private education development initiative outreach in Nigeria by reason of the college’s achievements within the 20 years in raising children that will touch lives through quality education.
Dr Babatunde in her 20th-anniversary speech made case for the integration of Robotic education into the school curriculum in Nigeria. According to her. The development would go a long way to promote technological development in Nigeria. She added that It is high time the government trained Nigerian youths at the secondary school level to make the country a technologically driven nation in the nearest future.
She said: “My passion has been to help children grow into confident individuals poised to take their place anywhere in the world. Our vision is to be an institution that provides education and training of uncompromising standards, that is relevant and consistent with students’ personal and social needs. Equal attention is paid to academic excellence, character training, extra curriculum activities and sports. So, our students participate actively in various debates, public speaking competitions and other similar events to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
“Sometimes ago, I invited Mrs Remi Willoughby, a Robotics Specialist and trainer from Texas to engage my students and teachers in robotic education and knowledge. I also sent out the teachers for a refreshing course on robotic education The development gave birth to the Genius KIT Technologies club in the college. I am glad to inform the world that our students have been able to construct and assemble moving robotic toys, trucks, helicopters, cars and so on.
“If every school in the country would invest in robotic education as part of the curriculum, the Nigerian youths’ fortune would improve.
David Falola, one of the club members in the college stated that robotic education could make youths self-sufficient and also contribute meaningfully to technological advancement in Nigeria. If the government would establish a robotic education centre especially for youths, our country can be exporters of robots and toy cars for the local market.
The record of the school shows that the college has won many academic and sports awards, as it has produced 1000’s of students for recognized universities home and abroad, out of whom have graduated in various disciplines: Law, Engineering, Medicine, Humanities, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Administration, Education, Science and so. The college periodically upgrades its teaching facilities and human capital development to keep the pace with ongoing education reform process in the country.
Speaking at the occasion, The Most Rev. Dr Segun Okubadejo, Arch Bishop of Ibadan Province, Bishop of Ibadan North Diocese, Anglican Communion praised Dr Mrs Babatunde for her passion for education development in Nigeria. He called on every Proprietor of private schools in the country to inculcate moral manner education into the lives of students in their respective schools.
According to him, the development would go a long way to produce future leaders of integrity for the country. Speaking in the same vein, Professor Akinwale Coker, the chairman of the occasion, and Chief Bayo Oyero, the Father of Day, asserted that for quality education assurance, the appointment of teachers must be based on good character and ability to impact academic excellence and value in students.
Moreover, some of the alumni of the school testified to the standard of the school. They described the college as an epitome of an ideal school.
According to them, the quality and the efficiency of the teachers, the zero tolerance for examination malpractice, and the prudent management, put the schools above all others in the state. This is evident in the quality of students produced by the college annually and who have moved on to pursue university education all over the globe.
Samson Adeyemi, the pioneer Head boy, 2005/2006 set, stated that the training and the academic exposure he received while he was in the college earned him the opportunity to be elected as the youth member of Parliament for Lewisham Council in the United Kingdom.
Speaking in the same vein, Adetoyese Odekunbi, Senior Legislative Aide, Deputy Senate President, National Assembly and Lilian Akwunwa, Principal partner, Malicha and Founder, lead Africa Writers Network, both alumni asserted that De Ayo International College is a training centre for raising Godly and well-rounded children who will obtain higher potential in life. “The college believes that all children can do well,” they said.
