Cultivate reading habit, Farounbi urges Nigerian youths

Published by

FORMER Nigerian ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Yemi Farounbi has charged Nigerians, especially youths, to cultivate the habit of reading so as to expand their scope of knowledge.

Speaking at the University of Ibadan during the public presentation of book titled; “Inextricably Entangled,” authored by Kemi Oshiyemi-Cole, Dr Farounbi said there is the need to encourage the younger ones to embrace the reading culture, which he said will broaden their horizon and worldview.

He lauded the author for her passion, which he said made her publish her maiden play, just as he charged her not to relent in writing more books for the benefit of mankind.

According to him, “This is something we must seriously tackle; a nation where the youth are not reading is heading for a dangerous future, therefore, we must stimulate and encourage them to read because it is only by reading that you expand the scope of knowledge.

“When I say reading, I don’t mean reading for examinations; I mean what we call the benefit of reading, you pick up a book, no matter the subject or your own discipline, you read it because the human brain is marvelous. The day you don’t expect, that knowledge you have acquired from that book will just come to space.

“So, I think for us to get to where we want to, to be able to compete worldwide, we must learn to read books.”

In her remarks, the author said the play focuses on the rich and privileged members of the society and their roles in making things better for people around them.

She said the rich and the privileged need to reach out to the less privileged in the society in order for them to also have peace of mind.

The book review was reviewed by a lecturer from the Department of Theater Arts, University of Ibadan, Olanike Onimisi, who said the book reveals how the past actions of the major subjects in the book resulted in consequences they never expected.
