Cross River lawmakers pass vote of confidence on Speaker Ayambe

All twenty-five members of the Cross River State House of Assembly have passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Rt Hon. Elvert Ayambem.

The motion for the vote of confidence was moved on Tuesday during plenary, by the member representing Yakurr 1 State Constituency, Hon Cyril James Omini and seconded by the Member representing Etung State Constituency, Hon Kingsley Ntui Isong.

Omini noted that the House will continue to work for the interest of the State.

“Last week, the House experienced a legislative disruption but we want the best for the State. On that note I move a motion for a vote of confidence on Mr Speaker.

“When the Speaker called for a voice vote on the motion, members voted unanimously for the vote of confidence accordingly,” Omini stated.

Recall that during the plenary of Wednesday, 22nd May 2024, there was a disruption of proceedings by some Members which has since been amicably resolved.

Tribune online reports that on Sunday night all twenty-five members of the Cross River State House of Assembly had a closed-door meeting with the state Governor, Senator Bassey Otu and agreed to restore normalcy and maintain the status quo with Hon. Elvert Ayambem remaining as their speaker.

It was gathered that Governor Otu, who presided over an interactive session with the legislative members and other stakeholders, restated his commitment to constitutional democracy, Separation of Powers and the rule of law, where due process should be the order of the day.

He called for a truce between the aggrieved members and the Speaker while urging the Speaker to understand that he is a first among equals and that members have rights and benefits, which the Speaker’s office should not deny them.

He emphasized the need for unity and a purpose-driven Legislature that complement the Executive arm in delivering democratic dividends.

The Speaker, Ayambem, reiterated the need for the House to continue working in unity and thanked the Governor for his intervention and pledged to lead the Legislature with decency, integrity and commitment to the welfare of members as well as the progress of the State.
