Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, Executive Chairman of BASPHCDA
17 Professors from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi have made themselves available to take jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine as the second phase of the vaccination was rolled out in Bauchi State.
The disclosure was made by the Executive Chairman of Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed while speaking to our correspondent in Bauchi.
He said, “immediately they heard that we had got a supply of vaccine, they quickly came to the Agency to take jabs. The reason was that they wanted to travel out of the country but were refused travelling documents, so, they had to come back to take them. Another person came from the State University in Gadau to take the vaccination. You can see how important it is.”
Rilwanu Mohammed further disclosed that 7 intending Christian pilgrims from the state could not make the trip because they refused to be vaccinated stressing that in the nearest future, evidence of being vaccinated will become part of the new normal not only in the country but all over the world.
He then called on Media practitioners in Bauchi State to join the campaign by educating the people about the vaccination as well as trying everything possible to disabuse their minds against the misconceptions and misinformation about the vaccine.
While reacting to the posture of the Media practitioners in the fight against the spread of the infection, he said that “To my surprise, only a few media men are here for the training, I don’t know where the others invited are, at least, their organizations should have sent in representatives, we need to have more of you people here to discuss the matter of COVID-19 vaccination.”
Rilwanu Mohammed added that “Now, the first and second doses of AstraZeneca vaccine has been administered but we still have about 21,000, we got another delivery of the vaccine yesterday, it is in our store.”
He, however, lamented that “People are making mistakes, if they take one vaccine, they will want to take another different vaccine, that is totally wrong. One of your colleagues took two different vaccines, which is not acceptable, it will not help the immunity, it may even affect the immunity.
“We have two people that have a severe fever, some are mild fever, these are expected in any vaccination, the important thing is to know that there is no cause for alarm, as soon as any of the symptoms is noticed, the person should just take PCM, they should not wait, and should report to the nearest health facility immediately,” he disclosed.
He emphasised, “People will have a reaction and keep quiet and die in silence. We have NAFDAC here and they are working to ensure that the vaccine remains potent, they are training people on how to handle the situation.
“We are doing everything possible to see how to ameliorate the suffering. Two of your members who took the jabs could not come out for a few days because of fever after taking the vaccination.
“We need to educate the people to know that the vaccine is a new product and has a mild fever so we need to take paracetamol and then report to the nearest health facility for administration.”
He concluded that “Information dissemination is the key activity of the COVID-19 vaccination, that is the reason we called you people here, we want you to be COVID-19 vaccination ambassadors, we want you to take the message to the grassroots so that the villagers will understand what we are saying about the vaccination.”
